Free SEO check for your website

Before Google decides where you rank, it reads a handful of things on the page. This checks the seven that cost nothing to fix and quietly hold most small business sites back. It runs against your live site and takes a few seconds.

What this checks

Why it matters

Most small business websites are not beaten in search by better competitors. They are beaten by the fact that nobody ever filled in the title tag, so Google invented one, and the invented one does not mention the town they work in or the thing they sell.

These are not advanced tactics. They are the fields a website builder leaves blank by default, and they stay blank for years because nothing on the screen ever complains. The page looks perfect to you and reads as untitled, undescribed and unmapped to a search engine.

Every one of them can be fixed in an afternoon, usually without a developer, and none of them need a monthly subscription to anybody.

How to fix it

  1. Write a real title for every page

Fifty to sixty characters, with what you do and where you do it. "Home" is not a title. "Brampton Fleet Maintenance | 24 Hour Mobile Truck Repair" is a title.

  2. Write the meta description as an advert

It does not change your ranking directly, it changes whether anyone clicks. Around 150 characters, written to a human, telling them why your result is the one to pick.

  3. Use exactly one H1 per page

One main heading tells Google and every screen reader what the page is about. Several H1s, or none, leaves both guessing.

  4. Add a canonical tag

It tells Google which address is the real one when the same page is reachable several ways, with and without www, with tracking parameters on the end. Without it you compete with yourself.

  5. Put more than three hundred words on the page

Thin pages rarely rank for anything. Answer the questions customers actually ask you on the phone, in the words they use.

  6. Publish robots.txt and sitemap.xml

One guides search bots, the other hands them a complete map of your pages. Both sit at the root of your domain and both are plain text files.

Questions

Will fixing these make me rank number one?
No, and anyone promising that is selling something. These are the basics that have to be right before anything else you do has a chance of working. Think of them as making sure the shop has a sign over the door, not as a marketing campaign.
How often should I run this?
Any time you redesign, migrate, or change your website platform. Those are the moments title tags and canonical tags get silently wiped, and nobody notices for months.
Does this replace Google Search Console?
No. Search Console is free, it is excellent, and you should connect it. This is the faster answer when you want to know whether a page is set up properly right now, including a page that is not yours.

The other seven checks

Each one is free, instant and needs just your email address. Or run all 25 at once.

Getting found is more than seven tags

The free check tells you what is broken. The audit is a dated report, tested by a person, that shows what was checked and when. That record is what protects you when somebody complains, and it is the part an automated scan cannot give you.

This is an automated check of what is publicly visible on your website. It is a plain language summary, not legal advice, and passing it does not by itself make you compliant with any particular law. Where a rule is mentioned, confirm it against the source before acting on it.
